Pink diamonds
So possibly not the best photograph that I have ever taken but if you knew the security I had to circumvent you would be impressed at what I do for you,3 dear Friends….. Because this was taken in a very discreet jeweller in a fabulous arcade next to Brown’s hotel (photograph below) and Argyle pink diamonds are the most rare diamonds on this earth.
Which may be why so few know about them….
Interestingly their colour is not caused by impurities. In fact,. gemologists are uncertain about what causes their beautiful pinky shades.
But the key is the deeper the colour the steeper the price. The GIA has seven grades of colour from Faint to Fancy and some jewellers have increased these names to include Vivid Fancy and a couple of others. They can be found in a few different mines in Russia, Brazil, India, South Africa and Canada but the most well-known mine with the highest quality diamonds was the Argyle mine in Western Australia. (Now sadly closed which means they are even rarer).
Like other stones such as Topaz, they can have modifying colours which can have a large impact on their price. The main modifying colours are Brownish and Orangish.
Clarity however has less effect on their price. This is due to the rarity which creates an immense difference in their price compared to a colourless or white diamond.
The price difference starts from six times the price for a diamond coloured Faint in comparison to a top quality White or Colourless diamond to more than one hundred times the difference in the price between a top quality colourless diamond and a Vivid Fancy.
They are so rare and so valuable that every diamond from the Argyle mine has its own laser-cut number.
Many people only first heard about them when Ben Affleck gave Jennifer Lopez a 6.1-carat engagement ring from Harry Winston.
However, they have been a quiet secret amongst the elites, particularly the Royals since the 17th century. Today they are worn by celebrities as well as royals such as Blake Lively who wears a stunning 7-carat engagement ring or Anna Kournikova who was given a wonderful 11-carat pear-shaped ring by Enrique Iglesias. Mariah Carey and Victoria Beckham have also been given these beautiful stones.
